Type locality, east of Wilsons Promontory, Bass Strait, Victoria, CSIRO H 3548-01 (holotype of Trygonoptera imitata, 61.3 cm TL, adult male). Known from off SE Australia from Beachport (South Australia) to Jervis Bay (New South Wales); through Bass Strait off Victoria. It has not been recorded from mainland Tasmania, but has been photographed at Flinders Island (Tasmania) and Gulf St. Vincent, South Australia (specimen photo is probably this species) (Ref. 76956).
