Known from the European Black Sea and Anatolian Black Sea watersheds. Also Ref. 106151. Considered a keystone species. Very sensitive to human activities. Threatened due to over fishing, bycatch fishing, habitat loss, eutrophication/pollution, construction of weirs/dams and aquaculture/introduction/lessepsian immigration. Listed on Annex V of the EU Habitats Directive.

Status of threat: Critically Endangered (Ref. 58342). EurTurk.
