Known from the Kuskokwim, Yukon, Selawik and Kobuk river drainages (Ref. 27547). Does not ascend the Tanana much beyond Fairbanks; migrates up the Koyukuk River at least as far as Alatna (Ref. 27547). Occurs in brackish nearshore waters of the Alaskan Beaufort Sea (Ref. 28503). There are 5 distinct populations that more or less, do not mix with each other: Minto Flats, upper Yukon River, Kuskokwim, lower Yukon River, and Kobuk-Selawik (Ref. 27547). Taken by subsistence fisheries along the Kobuk, Selawik, lower Yukon, Koyukuk and Kuskokwim rivers (Ref. 27547). Wigutoff & Carlson 1950 (Ref. 28841) report a commercial fishery in the Kotzebue area.
