Comments

First introduced in the late 1600s; now established in much of the country based on 2011 report (Ref. 86798). Found in fresh and brackish waters of Chesapeake Bay tributaries in Maryland (Ref. 39170). Occurs in shallow, muddy pools and backwaters of sluggish rivers, ponds and lakes. Usually found in warm turbid or vegetated water (Ref. 86798). Bred in Arkansas for bait (Ref. 26870). A popular aquarium fish, found in 100% of pet shops near Lakes Erie and Ontario (Ref. 53249).
