Occurs throughout India except Kerala (Ref. 41236). Known from Cauvery, Krishna and Godavari river systems in southern India and fresh waters of Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Assam (Ref. 4832, 45255); Moyar, Bhavani River, Tamil Nadu (Ref. 44148) and Maharashtra (Ref. 43634). Widely cultivated in 'bheries' and estuarine waters in the Sundarbans, West Bengal and extensively used for stocking tanks in several parts of India (Ref. 4832). Present in Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721), also in Buxa, Adma and Jayanti rivers (Ref. 89719).

Status of threat: Low risk in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
