Type locality: St. Johns River, Florida (Ref. 79012). Known from Savannah River in South Carolina to Nueces River in Texas, north in Mississippi River basin to southern Indiana and Illinois. Now widely transplanted in eastern USA as far north as Pennsylvania and northern Illinois (Ref. 5723). Also Ref. 10294.
