Known from southern Great Lakes basin and Mississippi basin from Illinois River through entire Ohio, Cumberland and Tennessee river drainages, but widely extirpated in Midwest (Ref. 10294). Also found west of Mississippi River from Central Arkansas River northeast to Meramec River, a tributary to the lower Missouri River (Ref. 10294). Common to abundant in southern part of range, but disappearing from much of north, especially in the agricultural areas. Ozarks of southern Missouri, northern Arkansas and northeastern Oklahoma (Ref. 5723).
