Historically found in several tributaries of Tennessee River in Virginia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia to Alabama; now present only in Little Tennessee River in North Carolina, Buffalo and Emory river in Tennessee, and Holston River in Virginia and Tennessee (Ref. 86798). Also Ref. 3881, 5723, 10294.

Status of threat: threatened; status same as 1989 listing. Criteria: 1 (http://fisc.er.usgs.gov/afs/) (Ref. 81264).
