Ranges from the west coast south to Port Alfred (common). This species is said to be replaced by R. campbelli off Natal (Ref. 11228) but Ref. 11284 lists its occurrence from about 23°S off the east coast southward. Common catch of hake trawlers. Also Ref. 2708.
