Known in Rugezi swamps, Mukungwa river, Lakes Bulera, Luhondo, Mohasi and Kivu, Upper and middle Akagera, and Rusizi drainage (Ref. 46152). This species has recently strongly declined in the Upper Akagera, most likely because of predation by and or competition with the introduced Clarias gariepinus and Schilbe intermedius (Ref. 46152). Also reported as Clarias carsonii.
