Type locality, Aomori, Honshu, holotype of Gobius castaneus. Known from SW Honshu, W Honshu, and northern tip of Honshu (Ref. 81467); from Hokkaido to Yakushima (Ref. 559). Also Ref. 37812. Status of threat: Critically endangered (Gymnogobius sp. "Chokai-endemic species") (Gymnogobius sp. "Toyama-endemic species"); Endangered (Gymnogobius sp.
