Known only from a limited area off southern Kii Peninsula, Honshu I. (Wakayama), southern Shikoku I. (Kochi), southeastern Kyushu I. (Miyakazi and Kagoshima), and Tanega I. Type locality, Meitsu, Nango, Miyazaki, Kyushu. Commonly occurs from spring to early winter (April - December) in shallow waters off Miyazaki, SE part of Kyushu I. Disappearing from winter set net catches (January - March). Commonly observed in estuarine river basins in Miyazaki through early summer to early autumn (June to early September). Autumn observations (Late October to December) of aggregations of larger individuals landed in set net suggest that the species schools in autumn before overwintering, possibly in warmer seawater (Ref. 43141).
