Occurs in head waters of Cauvery in Nilgiri, Wynaad and Karnataka and considered endangered (Ref. 41236). Recorded from Bhavani, Kabani & south Canara hill ranges (Ref. 43640); Nulpuzha, Wynaad, Kerala (Ref. 44148); Bavalipuzha, Wynaad (Ref. 44149). Introduced into reservoirs and lakes in peninsular India (Ref. 4832). The most common fish in the Periyar lake in Kerala (Ref. 4832). Also Ref. 4832.

Status of threat: Endangered (Ref. 41236), specifically in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614).
