Known from river basins of peninsular India flowing into the Bay of Bengal, from Godavari to Cauvery (Ref. 4832). Occurs in northern India from Punjab to West Bengal and Assam. Transplanted into waters of peninsular India for aquaculture. Recorded from Chilka Lake (Ref. 29108), Western Ghats (Ref. 40976), Krishna (Ref. 43641), Maharashtra (Ref. 43634), Meenachil, Manimala and Pampa rivers (Ref. 44311). Previously reported by Day in 1878 to occur in Godavary, Krishna and Cauvery rivers and generally in South India. Present in Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal lakes (Ref. 89721), also in Adma and Jayanti rivers (Ref. 89719). Today it is not found in Krishna or Godavari river systems (Ref. 41236). Considered vulnerable in Western Ghats (Ref. 50614). Also Ref. 1739, 43634, 43640, 45255.
