First observed in Wahiawa Reservoir in April 1988; occurrence is limited to the Wahiawa Reservoir and the streams, ditches and reservoirs that drain it; its numbers rapidly increased and raised concerns about its potential impact on the reservoir fisheries, resulting in a total ban on its importation and of any freshwater needlefish (Ref. 44091).
