Widely distributed in the Congo River basin; known from the lower Congo (Ref. 1879), Pool Malebo (Ref. 41585, 44985, 88942), middle Congo River (Ref. 1879, 4910, 41594), Kasai (Ref. 46243), Sankuru (Ref. 88943), lakes Mai-Ndombe (Ref. 1879) and Tumba (Ref. 44912), the Tshuapa (Ruki drainage)(Ref. 41580), Ubangui (Ref. 45441), Uele (Ref. 1879, 41594), Itimbiri (Ref. 41590, 106290), Aruwimi/Ituri (Ref. 41594, 106290), Lindi-Tshopo (Ref. 106290), Wagenia Falls (Ref. 106245), Lualaba (Ref. 45434, 45616) and upper Lualaba (Lake Upemba) (Ref. 45616). Report from the Chiloango (Ref. 88943) is unconfirmed in Ref. 81635. Type locality of the holotype of Mormyrus (Petrocephalus) sauvagii: 'the creeks of the Lower Congo and the tributary streams' (Ref. 42539). Also Ref. 1878.
