Known only from the rio do Ouro, a tributary of the rio Jucuruçu, Itamaraju municipality in Bahia state, northeastern Brazil. This is the only population belonging to the Gymnotus pantherinus species group found in this basin or in its neighboring, indicating that this is a very rare and endangered species (Ref. 96661).
