Type locality of Hippocampus subelongatus and Hippocampus elongatus, Fremantle, Western Australia (Ref. 75154). Known from Freemantle, Perth, Swan River, Houtman Abrolhos Islands. Moved under the Australian Wildlife Protection Act in 1998; numbers have declined substantially in 1998 in the Swan River near Perth purportedly due to overcollecting for aquaria (Ref. 30915).
