Commercial fishery: Antarctic silverfish are taken by mid-water trawling on the continental shelf in Prydz Bay. They are also caught by the same trawling method in shelf areas to the west of Prydz Bay and in the southern Pacific Ocean. Very small catches of Antarctic silverfish have been taken near the Antarctic Peninsula and South Orkney Islands. Antarctic silverfish are taken by trawlers from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) of the former USSR (Ref. 28912). In the Prydz Bay area, annual catches of Antarctic silverfish have varied between 30 t and 966 t, while in the southern Pacific Ocean, catches reached 1517 t in 1981. Antarctic silverfish are small, the flesh has a high oil content (Ref. 28912) and is probably only suitable for industrial purposes such as oil production. As of 1993, there are no markets for this species in Australia. Resource status: In the Antarctic, Antarctic silverfish are probably not fully exploited.
