Second dorsal fin with 9 segmented rays, first dorsal din with spines 3 and 4 filamentous in males; pectoral fin usually with 14 rays; scales extend ventral to first dorsal fin and usually widely spaced anteriorly; predorsal midline usually naked in males and with few cycloid scales anterior to first dorsal fin origin in females; rakers absent from inner edge of outer gill arch; males with a dusky ring on pelvic disk, dorsal to midline and on caudal peduncle with 2 to 4 rows of whitish spots; females with dusky lateral bands, not blackish.
Occurs in clear, swift streams, sometimes close to the sea. Collected also above a waterfalls.
