Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15 - 17; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 15 - 16. Can be distinguished from congeners by the pattern in the caudal fin. Males also show an irregular red blotch on the operculum.

Found in small, temporary, weedy pools (Ref. 41296).
