This species is distinguished by a naked predorsal midline with a fleshy ridge; a slightly elongate second dorsal spine; interorbital trenches; no opercular scales; fifth pelvic fin ray unbranched; color in life is uniformly orange-red (Ref. 59340); characterized further by having all pectoral rays unbranched, 50-65% length of fourth ray; longitudinal scale series 22-26; depth of body 3.6-4.0 in SL (Ref. 90102).
Inhabits caves and ledges of coastal reefs in 8-26 m (Ref. 90102).
