Comments: Known from the upper reaches of Blyde River, Limpopo system, eastern Transvaal. Previously found in the Treur and Sabie rivers. Reduced to a single population which is protected by a waterfall from invading predatory fishes, particularly rainbow trout. Also Ref. 2801, 27553.

Found mainly in small pools and behind rocks in flowing runs of clear mountain streams. Feeds on aquatic invertebrates, particularly insects. Co-exists with the small amphiliid catfish Amphilius natalensis (Ref. 6465). Breeds in early summer, with both sexes developing small tubercles on the head.
