Etymology: Trachyscorpia: Greek, trachys, -eia, y = rough + Greek, skorpis, idos = a kind of fish without identification (Ref. 45335).

Motomura et al. (2007:33) suggest that this subspecies is perhaps a distinct species and direct comparison of specimens must be done (Ref. 75873).
