Pethia expletiforis can be distinguished from its congeners in the Chindwin-Irrawaddy and Ganga-Brahmaputra drainages by the combination of the following characters: complete lateral line; nine predorsal scales, 12 scales around caudal peduncle; ½4/1/3½ transverse scales; caudal peduncle with black blotch; and humeral mark and barbels absent (Ref. 94425).
