Comments: Known from Vistonis Lake. Status of threat: Endangered (Ref. 41624); Critically endangered (CR A2ace; B1 ab(iii,v). Thought to be extinct but was reported by a fisherman in 2005 from Lake Vistonis. It is threatened by sewage, industrial effluents, alteration or destruction of spawning sites by agricultural development and increased salinity following the opening of a canal into the sea (Ref. 59043). Distinguished from its congeners entering freshwater of Mediterranean basin by having 78-97 gill rakers and well-developed teeth on palatine and vomer, especially in juveniles (Ref. 59043).

Landlocked, found in a shallow lake, of purely fresh water at its inland extremity and a brackish lagoon at the lower extremity; inhabits mostly the freshwater part. No data on its biology. This species is threatened by sewage, industrial effluents, alteration or destruction of spawning sites by agricultural development and increased salinity following the opening of a canal into the sea (Ref. 59043).
