Comments: Recorded from almost all the water bodies in mainland China, in Zhujiang (=Pearl River), Minjiang, Xiangjiang, Changjiang (=Yangtze River), Huanghe (=Huanghe River), Haihe, Songhuajiang, and Heilongjiang (=Amur) rivers (Ref. 45654), Canton basin (Ref. 13397), Lianzi Lake (Ref. 38003) and Tungting Lake known as "huang-ku-yü" (Ref. 35840). Also found in Beijiang River (Ref. 89718). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (intensive culture and extensive stocking in all kinds of inland waters) (Ref. 55380). Present in Pearl River (Ref. 89718). Known from Zhaoguan, Sanshui and Zhaoqing of Guangdong Prov.; Yang Shuo of Guangxi Prov.; Nanchang of Jiangxi Prov.; Yueyang of Hunan Prov.; Zhejiang of Jiangsu Prov.; Baiyangdian of Hebei Prov.; Beijing; Liaozhong, Banshan of Liangning Prov (Ref. 45654). Adults occur mainly in river channels and lakes. They feed on the bottom on insects (particularly on trichopterans and chironomids), mollusks, occasionally on fishes (Ref. 6868). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are guarded by the males (Ref. 45232). Important food fish (Ref. 89718).

Males have been reported to guard both the eggs and larvae in the nest hole, previously dug by the male in the clay bottom (Ref. 4576).
