This species is small, usually less than 40 mm SL, semitranslucent, red and lacking stripes or bars or black edges on scales on body sides; dorsal VI-I,8-9 (almost always I,9); anal II,8; pectoral 13-15 (almost always 14); usually a total of 16 or fewer gillrakers (rudiments included) on the first gill arch; 2 predorsal (supraneural) bones; a free edge of skin near the anterior nasal opening; 2 scales between the lateral line and the base of the third spine of the first dorsal fin (Ref. 58270).
