Etymology: Rasbora: Rasbora, an Indian word for a fish, also used in Malay peninsula;  bindumatoga: Derived from the term ‘Bindu Matoga’ in the two native languages of northern Sumatra, Mandailing and Toba, which are widely spoken throughout the distribution range of the species. ‘Bindu Matoga’ is commonly used as the name of a unique traditional ornament that has a rectangle outline. The specific name refers to the rectangular shape of the black subdorsal blotch of the species. A noun in apposition..

Radios blandos dorsales (total): 8; Radios blandos anales: 7; Vértebra: 32 - 33. Diagnosed from other species of Rasbora by the following combination of characters: supra-anal pigmentation absent; the black midlateral stripe is only represented by a rectangular subdorsal blotch without a midhumeral diffuse patch and the posterior-portion stripe; and the basicaudal blotch appearing somewhat oval and lacking the basicaudal triangular patch (Ref. 94947).
