Short description
Morfología | Morfometría
Radios blandos dorsales (total): 9-13; Radios blandos anales: 9 - 12. This species is closely related to a group containing Aphanius sophiae, A. mesopotamicus and A. pluristriatus. An unambiguous species separation within this group is only possible by molecular characters. However, A. kavirensis can still be distinguished from these closely related species by the following combination of three morphological characters: females with irregularly arranged large blotches of dark brown color on the flank, short pectoral fin in both sexes (13.4-18.1% SL in males, 11.2-18.3% SL in females), and otoliths of slightly asymmetrical triangular to trapezoid shape with a pronounced predorsal portion, a thick antirostrum and a rostrum that is equal or slightly longer than the antirostrum (Ref. 95579).
