Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335);  wisneri: Named in honor of Robert L. Wisner, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, in recognition of his contributions to the systematics of myctophids and other oceanic fishes (Ref. 36121).

Espinas dorsales (total): 0; Radios blandos dorsales (total): 14-15; Espinas anales 0; Radios blandos anales: 16 - 19; Vértebra: 36 - 38. 13-16 AO photophores; 8-10 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 34-37 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fins completely lacking in subadult and adult stages; vestigial in small juveniles (less than 3 cm SL); fin rays present but buried in skin in larger juveniles (Ref. 36121).
