Etymology: Paraliparis: Greek, para = the side of + Greek, liparis = fat (Ref. 45335);  retrodorsalis: From the Latin retro meaning rear, and dorsalis meaning dorsal, in reference to the relatively posterior position of the first dorsal fin ray between vertebrae 7 and 8.  More on authors: Stein, Chernova & Andriashev.

Épines dorsales (Total): 0; Rayons mous dorsaux (Total): 62; Épines anales 0; Rayons mous anaux: 56; Vertèbres: 68. Caudal-fin rays 8; pectoral fin bilobed, without rudimentary notch rays, lower lobe short; pectoral girdle with 4 round radials; body not hump-backed; mouth horizontal, subterminal, lower jaw included; chin pore interspace equal to pore diameter, not in a pit, without skin fold anteriorly; interneural of first dorsal ray between neural spines 7 and 8; body and peritoneum black, mouth black, tongue black-dotted, tooth plates dark (Ref. 42734).
