Dorsal spines (total): 3; Dorsal soft rays (total): 7-8; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 5. Body slender; the third simple ray of the dorsal is slender and flexible.

Inhabits small streams and the larger river systems with or without aquatic weeds (Ref. 13337). Favors slow-flowing streams with vegetation (Ref. 7248). Forms shoals and undertakes seasonal movements up tributaries and onto floodplains (Ref. 13337).
