Etymology: Lampanyctus: Greek, lampas, -ados = torch + Greek, nykte = night (Ref. 45335).

Marine; bathypelagic; oceanodromous (Ref. 51243); depth range 60 - 1150 m (Ref. 36121). Deep-water; 42°N - 37°S, 82°W - 153°W

Tropical and subtropical waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific oceans. Eastern Atlantic: disjunct distribution between 35°N-27°S and in Agulhas Water pockets (absent over the upwelling region between 17°N-9°N, east of 30°W). Western Atlantic: disjunct distribution between 42°N-10°S. Indian Ocean: between 8°N-0°. Western Central Pacific: Philippines. Considerable differences between Atlantic and Indo-Pacific material suggests that there may be more than one species involved (Ref. 36121).

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 16-18; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 20 - 23; Vertebrae: 37 - 44. 14-17 AO photophores; 8-10.5 tooth patches on the lower limb of the second gill arch; 37-44 lateral line organs (Ref. 36121). Pectoral fin rays rather weak, flexible (Ref. 36121).
