Eye stalks short and only in early preflexion stage. Fin rays form in finfold, away from body margin. More lateral body pigment and higher total vertebral count than in L. stilbius (47-52 vs. 39-42). Large blotch-like melanophores on gut and body. Pigmentation: Preflexion: blotch on trunk above midgut, extends to midgut when expanded; blotch on hindgut, extends dorsad to trunk when expanded. Flexion-postflexion: series of 2-8 (large) on trunk; series of 3-6 on hindgut; 1-4 on opercle; at tip of lower jaw; 1-2 on caudal peduncle; on base of caudal fin rays in late postflexion. Sequence of fin development: caudal, anal, dorsal, pectorals, pelvics. Distinguished from B. milleri by: eye stalks short; lack of dorsal spots. |
