Deep, laterally compressed body; gut moderate in length, robust, strongly sigmoid; large head with long pointed snout; eyes small and round; no choroid tissue; adipose fin present; teeth needle-like, larger at tip of jaws; pectoral fin forms early in preflexion stage and becomes large; pigment streak through eye; similar S. clarkei lacks eye stripe and has mandibular, posterior head, and nape pigment after flexion stage. Pigmentation: Preflexion: smallest larvae have a blotch above gut and about 7 in a postanal median ventral series, but no peritoneal gut pigment as in other myctophiform families; by 4.6 mm, an embedded linear blotch in snout and an embedded post-orbital blotch give the appearance of a streak through eye. Flexion-postflexion: postanal series reduced to 1-5, or absent; blotch above gut becomes elongate. Sequence of fin formation: pectorals (3.5 mm SL), caudal, dorsal and anal (5.0-7.0 mm SL), pelvics (6.5-7.0 mm SL). |
