Initially, head small, body slender, and gut short and strongly sigmoid; beginning at about 5.0 mm, head and body become deep and compressed; head large with elongate snout and large jaws armed with large teeth; tooth patch with larger teeth on upper jaw tip; pectoral and pelvic fins large and pigmented; distinctive pigment pattern with adipose blotch and stripe through eye; only Br2 develops during larval period (7.8 mm SL), remaining photophores develop synchronously at end of transformation period. Pigmentation: Preflexion: unpigmented except for spots on lower jaw tip and snout; jaw tips, internal along snout, postorbital, opercle; pectoral and pelvic fins; large spot at adipose fin. Flexion: on snout at tip, on nostril, and just anterior to eye; 1 posterior to orbit; blotch at adipose fin; series above gut and gas bladder; on inner surface of pectoral fin base; 1 in midline above cerebellum; peppering on pelvic fin blades. Postflexion: myosepta becoming outlined in gut region; some develop 1 in middle anterior to dorsal fin. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal and anal and pectorals and pelvics (pelvics may form early).
