Diagnostic characters: paired dorsolateral series of spots on embryo just before hatching; eyes unpigmented; body elongate with long straight gut, 86-91% SL before flexion decreasing to 75% SL in juveniles; vent always posterior to dorsal fin; muscle-band striations obvious until transformation; air bladder present but not obvious in posterior gut; dorsal pigment absent from notochord tip, but ventral pigment present; predorsal myomeres decrease from 25 to 15. Sequence of fin formation: pectoral (23-25 mm SL); caudal (10 mm SL); dorsal (25-30 mm SL); anal (25-30 mm SL); pelvic (14->50 mm SL).
