Diagnostic characters: distinguished from Xiphister species by: relatively large at comparable stages of development (e.g., hatching occurs >10.0 mm SL); larger relatively eye diameter; dorsal body midline unpigmented in preflexion and flexion larvae; distinguished from Anoplarchus purpurescens by lack of hypural spots in preflexion and flexion larvae. Pigment: postanal ventral midline with about 30 spots; dorsally about eight spots ongut; ventral pigment present; row of internal pigment over notochord. Sequence of fin development: caudal, dorsal and anal, pectorals.
