In early preflexion stage, pigment on caudal fin and patch at midtail; from late preflexion through postflexion stages, pigment absent along ventral tail margin; heavy ventral patch anterior to anus; total caudal rays 22-26; pelvic fin rays 6; early forming, elongate pelvic fin rays; anus at about 30% BL. Pigmentation: Preflexion: on brain, gut, jaw angle, and operculum; ventral patch near midtail; finfold pigment near end of tail; by about 5 mm, on isthmus, at end of pelvic rays, midtail patch spreads to form bar, and a second tail patch forms anterior to the first; by about 7 mm, heavy patch anterior to anus and row above and below notochord along most of tail. Flexion-postflexion: spreading along pelvic fin and on lateral tail dorsal and ventral to notochord. Juvenile: on fins, branchiostegal region, peritoneum, and scattered over body. Sequence of fin development: pectorals, pelvics, second dorsal and anal, first dorsal and caudal. |
