Etymology of generic noun |
Greek, galaxias, ou = a kind of fish (Ref. 45335). |
Etymology of specific epithet |
Name from Latin 'olida', 'olid' or 'olidum', meaning to smell or foul smelling, stinking, the name remains unclear as live or freshly preserved individuals are not known to impart a distinctive odour, with the holotype currently smells only of preservative. Probably the liquid the holotype was originally preserved in, or later transferred to, may have had a distinctive odour at the time the description was made, but this is purely conjecture. |
