Definition of Term

spiracle
(English) A respiratory opening between the eye and the first gill slit of in Elasmobranchii, Acipenseridae, Polyodontidae, and Polypteridae; connects with the gill cavity, often retains branchial lamellae which are called the spiracular pseudobranch. Shark spiracles are small (e.g. Galeocerdo), but ray spiracles are larger and serve as an opening for water entering the gill chamber. (See also: gill slits, pharynx, sharks)

(French) Ouverture respiratoire entre l'oeil et la première fente branchiale des requins et des raies qui conduit à la cavité pharyngienne ; les orifices des requins sont petits (par exemple Galeocerdo), mais les orifices des raies sont plus grands et servent comme une ouverture de la cavité branchiale. (Portuguese) Abertura respiratória entre o olho e a primeira abertura branquial dos tubarões e raias ligando à cavidade faringeal. Nos tubaões que possuem uma (Galeocerdo) é pequena mas nas raias é grande e serve para a entrada de água na câmara branquial. (See also: gill slits, pharynx, sharks)
