Family:  Tetraodontidae (Puffers), subfamily: Tetraodontinae
Max. size:  40 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  demersal; freshwater; brackish; marine, anadromous
Distribution:  Western Pacific: East China Sea and the South China Sea. Found in rivers in China and the Korean Peninsula.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 0-0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-19; Anal spines: 0-0; Anal soft rays: 13-16. Body covered with prickles. A large black blotch on side beneath pectoral fin and on base of dorsal fin (Ref. 559).
Biology:  Euryhaline species (Ref. 58920). Adults migrate to freshwater to spawn (Ref. 58920).

Threat to humans:  poisonous to eat
Country info:  Found in rivers (Ref. 559). Introduced from its native range to other regions in the country (intensive culture in ponds and cages)(Ref. 55380).
