Max. size:  130 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 30 kg
Environment:  demersal; freshwater
Distribution:  Asia: Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, the Korean Peninsula, Taiwan, China, and Russia.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal soft rays (total): 4-4; Anal soft rays: 67-84. The side of the dorsal is dark grey; white stomach; with irregular white dots on the side. One pair of maxillary barbel, longer than the head; one pair of mandibular barbels, about 1/5-1/3 the length of the maxillary barbel (Ref. 40516).
Biology:  Commercially cultured in Japan. Adults feed on all types of fish (Ref. 41072). Recorded as having been or being farmed in rice fields (Ref. 119549).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Occurs in Lake Khanka and Amur river basin (Ref. 13397) and Sakhalin (Ref. 37812). This has been translocated to areas within the country for stocking in open waters. It has rapidly expanded its range and is now widely established in the country (Ref. 45022). Has also been introduced to the Baikal basin (Ref. 26334). nEurRus
