Family:  Haemulidae (Grunts), subfamily: Plectorhinchinae
Max. size:  28.5 cm SL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 5 - 30 m
Distribution:  Eastern Indian Ocean: Andaman Sea, off southwestern Thailand.
Diagnosis:  Dorsal spines (total): 12-12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 21-21; Anal spines: 3-3; Anal soft rays: 8-8. Description: Head and body white with black spots extending to dorsal, anal, and caudal fins, coalesced forming bands on cheeks. Juveniles white, dorsal with stripes 3-4 broad black, ventral with a row of black spots. Body depth 2.5-2.8 in SL. Dorsal fin 3rd to 5th spines longest. Caudal fin slightly rounded in juveniles, truncate in adults. (Ref. 90102)
Biology:  Solitary in caves, crevices, and pinnacle reefs (Ref. 90102).
