Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: Atlantic Slope from St. Lawrence River drainage in Quebec, Canada to Altamaha River drainage in Georgia, USA; Lake Ontario drainage in Ontario, Canada and New York, USA.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Occurs in pools and backwaters of low-gradient creeks and small to large rivers (Ref. 86798). Oviparous, open substratum spawners (Ref. 205, 52559). Feeds on plant material, benthic diatoms, algae and detritus (Ref. 93252).
IUCN Red List Status: Least Concern (LC); Date assessed: 15 February 2012 Ref. (130435)
Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Known from St. Lawrence River drainage to Altamaha River drainage in Georgia, and Lake Ontario drainage in New York (Ref. 86798). Abundant in all tributaries of the Chesapeake Bay (Ref. 27549).
