Max. size:  91.4 cm TL (male/unsexed); max.weight: 1,800.0 g; max. reported age: 21 years
Environment:  demersal; marine; depth range 27 - 49 m
Distribution:  Southwest Pacific: New Zealand.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Inhabits shallow waters, generally at depth of less than 50 m. Juveniles gather in sheltered inshore waters, such as estuarine areas, shallow mudflats and sandflats, where they remain for up to two years (Ref. 9072).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Most common in the south (Ref. 9258). Recorded from bottom trawls off the east coast of South Island (Ref. 58461). Taken as a trawl bycatch (Ref. 9258). Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ. Also Ref. 9072, 26272, 45493.
