Commonly found in kelp and weed areas of shallow rocky reefs exposed to strong surge and wave action (Ref. 33616). Feed on invertebrates and small fishes (Ref. 9003). |

Known from mainland New Zealand (Ref. 8879, 45524). Specimens recorded from North Cape to Cook Strait. More common north of the Bay of Plenty. Voucher specimen(s) held at the NMNZ (Ref. 5755). Also Ref. 9002. |
