Environment:  benthopelagic; freshwater
Distribution:  North America: northeastern Mexico and north to the Great Lakes.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Nearly always found in shallow water, preferring habitats with dense vegetation in small lakes, ponds and slow moving rivers and streams. Feed on small aquatic invertebrates, insects, and occasionally small fishes. (Ref. 4543, 10294).

Country info:  Recorded from the southern portion of Hudson Bay drainage (rare), Mississippi Basin, tributaries to lakes Huron, Michigan, and Erie, and Gulf Coastal drainages from Apalachicola River west through Rio Grande drainage in Mexico (Ref. 10294).
