Max. size:  33 cm TL (male/unsexed)
Environment:  reef-associated; marine; depth range 6 - 60 m
Distribution:  Eastern Atlantic: St. Paul Rocks, Ascension and St. Helena.
Diagnosis:   
Biology:  Caught in areas of rock and rubble bottoms associated with sand or reef-like areas. Protogynous hermaphrodite, with obvious sexual dichromatism (Ref. 5292). Oviparous, distinct pairing during breeding (Ref. 205). Juveniles remove ectoparasites from other species (Ref. 86997).

Threat to humans:  harmless
Country info:  Type locality, English Bay (Ref. 35918). Found around rocks from the surface to more than 50 m depth (Ref. 86997). As Cossyphus rufus in Ref. 123408. Also Ref. 6709, 5288, 3637.
